Maihaugen
Some places tell you about the past. Maihaugen lets you step right into it.
Norway’s largest open-air museum brings together more than 200 buildings, from the Middle Ages to modern times. The Garmo Stave Church from the 13th century stands proudly on the hill above the entrance. Below it, farms, workshops, town houses, and entire neighbourhoods from the 19th and 20th centuries have been moved here plank by plank and rebuilt exactly as they once stood.
Seasons at Maihaugen
In summer, the museum comes alive. Craftsmen work in the forge and carpentry workshop. Guides in period clothing show everyday life as it once was. Children can meet sheep, goats, pigs, and horses on the farms.
In winter, it is quieter, but just as worth a visit. You can walk between the buildings in peace, with snow on the turf roofs and silence in the streets.
Allow at least half a day. Ideally, a full one.
The ticket also includes the Norwegian Olympic Museum and the Norwegian Postal Museum. If you purchase a combined ticket, you receive a 25% discount on the other museums in the Lillehammer Museum Foundation: Aulestad, Bjerkebæk, and Lillehammer Art Museum.
