The Olympic bobsleigh and toboggan track

Try Scandinavia's only bobsleigh track

You've seen them on TV: fearless bobsleigh teams hurtling through a narrow ice chute at 130 kilometres per hour, with forces of up to 5G in the turns. But what few people know is that you can try it yourself. The Lillehammer Olympic bobsleigh and toboggan track is located at Hunderfossen, just fifteen minutes from Nermo, and is open to anyone who dares to try it.

The bobsleigh track was built for the 1994 Winter Olympics and remains in full operation. Over 20 nations train here every year, and most teams stay at Nermo Hotel. This is usually the first track in the world to freeze over in the autumn. In 2027, it will host the World Championships in bobsleigh and skeleton. Between the world records and the World Cup competition, ordinary people climb into the bobsleigh and experience it firsthand.

Three ways to ride a bobsleigh in winter

Bobraft is the most popular variety. You get into a rubber bob with room for five or six people, an experienced pilot steers, and the speed reaches 100 kilometres per hour. The force in the corners reaches 3G. It sounds intense, but the experience is safe and lasts for just over a minute. The age limit is ten years with a parent, twelve alone.

For those who want the real thing: Taxibob means three passengers in a real competition bobsleigh with a pilot. The speed can reach 120 kilometres per hour, and the power can reach 5G. This is as close to an Olympic experience as you can get without qualifying.

All variants require a helmet, and the track crew provides thorough safety instructions in advance

Wheel bob in summer

When the ice melts, the wheel bob takes over. Same track, same turns, but on wheels instead of sleds. Four passengers plus a pilot, up to 100 kilometres per hour and 3G in the corners. Wheel bob has become one of the region's most popular summer activities, and tickets can go quickly. Book in advance.

The experience takes a quarter of an hour from when you arrive until you are standing in the finish area with your heart in your throat and a slightly stiff smile that stretches from ear to ear.

More than just a bobsleigh track

At the facility, the Olympic Park offers paintball for groups of ten or more on an outdoor court right next to the bobsleigh track. Age limit 16 years. Groups can combine bobraft and paintball on the same day.

Nothing boosts the mood in a team like sending the boss down an ice chute at 100 kilometres per hour! We can put together packages with accommodation at Nermo, dinner at Nermostuene and a bobsleigh experience for the whole group.

From Olympic arena to crowd magnet

When the bobsleigh track was completed in 1992 it had been built for the world's best athletes. The 1994 Olympics brought it international attention. The 2016 Youth Olympics brought a new generation here. And now everything points to the World Championships in bobsleigh and skeleton in 2027, with the Sliding Festival building up the atmosphere in the years leading up to the championship.

But what makes the course special is that it is not just reserved for the elite. Around 10,000 visitors try the course every year. It's that combination of world-class and popular accessibility that makes the place worth a visit. And it is only a quarter of an hour from Nermo.

How to get to the bobsleigh track

The bobsleigh and toboggan track is located at Hunderfossen, 15 kilometres north of Lillehammer city centre. It is a fifteen-minute drive from Nermo. If you are travelling by train, you can disembark at Hunderfossen station.

We can also help arrange transportation for groups. Booking tickets in advance is recommended, especially during holidays and weekends. Check olympiaparken.no for opening hours and prices.

Winter season for activities on ice: October to March. Wheel bob in summer: see olympiaparken.no for dates.
