Cabin in a treetop? Try a suite in an ancient storehouse!

Treetop cabins, glass igloos, floating cabins and tents with panoramic views. Never before have there been more out-of-the-ordinary places to stay in Norway. But what if the most unique place is not the newest, but the oldest?

The storehouse suites at Nermo are built of timber that was felled sometime before 1730. Not designed in an architectural office with a concept in mind built by people who needed a safe place for their grain and cured hams. The fact that the same timber today houses a gas fireplace, underfloor heating and handmade bathtubs is due to six years of work and a hotel host who did not give up.

More than four walls and a bed

The treetop cabins are perhaps the most visible proof that more and more people are looking for a special place to spend the night. These are usually impressive structures, often in glass and steel, floating between tree trunks. But most have one thing in common: you check in, and then you're all alone. Nice for those who want to take care of themselves, and just stay in peace and quiet.

The storehouse suites at Nermo are something completely different. Here, you stay at a historic storehouse right beside the main building where the fifth generation of Nermo receives its guests. Breakfast awaits in Nermostuene. Dinner is made from ingredients from the farm and the local area. Between meals there is plenty of time for hot tubs and a sauna, a golf course and a fireplace lounge. And a host who is happy to tell you why this particular timber has stood for three centuries.

That's the difference between an unusual overnight stay and a unique hotel experience.

Something you can touch and feel

A treetop cabin may feel new and exciting. But the materials are new. Everything is designed, built and completed in a few months. The timber in the storehouses at Nermo was chopped in the forests around Flesberg in Numedal, probably sometime in the 1600s. The logs have known cold winters, dry summers and hundreds of seasonal changes.

It is noticeable when you put your hand on the wall. The surface is not smooth and uniform. It feels lived in. And it gives the rooms a character that no interior designer can replicate.

What is it like to stay in a storehouse?

Behind the rough walls, there is little that resembles an old grain warehouse. All four suites have a gas fireplace, underfloor heating, wine cabinets with red, white, rosé and sparkling wines, and comfortable continental beds from Svane. The large handmade bathtubs are eye-catching: on the ground floor they are sunk into the floor, on the second floor they stand freely in the middle of the bathroom. Either way, the views are spectacular.

A welcome drink and a minibar with local products are included, as is breakfast at the hotel. Three of the suites also have their own daybed with views of the valley.

True romance at the storehouse

It may not be a coincidence that couples are drawn to the storehouse. The building has its own history of romance, long before anyone came up with the term 'romantic weekend'. In the old farming community, the storehouse loft was the closest you could get to a separate room, away from the family and the village's gaze.

Historic Hotels Worldwide has named Nermo one of the world's 25 most romantic hotels two years in a row. The jury emphasized the location, architecture, historical character and facilities for couples. The combination of real history and modern comfort was what set Nermo apart from an ordinary hotel.

For those who want something genuine

There are many nice places to stay in Norway. Some soar among the treetops. Others float on the water. Some have glass walls and views of the stars.

The storehouse suites have the walls themselves. 300 years of life in the wood. A family that welcomes you as guests have always been welcomed to Nermo. And food from the landscape you see through your window.

In the evening, when you're lying in the bathtub and looking out over the valley, it's easy to forget that you were considering a treetop cabin.
